The good neighbouring scheme established in Darlington builds on an innovative alliance between Age UK Darlington, the police and Neighbourhood Watch. The scheme, Good Friends, involves a network of people who keep a watchful eye on their older and vulnerable neighbours, providing support and friendship and assisting them with a range of issues which if left unaddressed could compromise their ability to live safely and well independently. It was launched in October 2013. By the June of 2014 there were 645 Good Friends recruited, helping 238 neighbours and the scheme continues to grow.
