Social Media with Confidence (Trainer: Paul Nelson)

Hashtags and retweets, going viral and shouting out, Social Media is everywhere and changing the world and our lexicon, yet 10 years ago it did not exist.  It comes in different flavours and each has their own strengths, opportunities and, of course, many risks.  Social media is entering our everyday lives, invited and uninvited, both professionally and privately.

This workshop explores the uses, opportunities and risks of social media, offering real time demonstrations and hands on experience to guide participants in using social media, or a new channel, or to develop their understanding of one they already know.

The workshop will provide an understanding of the potential, scope and principles underlying social media.  It will describe the most popular channels, explaining their uses, differences and limitations and lexicon.

The workshop explores how participants can use social media both to promote their work, find out about others and to reach others with shared interests.   The session will answer the question of “why use social media?” as well as exploring ways of getting the best out of your social media channel of choice and keeping you safe in the process.

The session is accessible to non users, occasional users and regular users alike.

As a result of the session, you will be able to:

  • Have a clear understanding of how social media can be used in health care
  • Become familiar with the main social media platforms, what they are used for and how you can use them
  • Gain practical experience of using social media for yourself
  • Understand the limitations and pitfalls of social media
  • Have considered and/or developed your own social media strategy
