Asylum Seekers and Refugees Needs Assessment

Background:
Ipswich is designated as a dispersal centre for asylum seekers and refugees by the Home Office. The Asylum seekers and refugees have specific needs that require appropriate services.

What was the problem?
PHAST was commissioned by Suffolk County Council to evaluate the need for health services in managing the constant increase of the migrant population in Ipswich.

How did PHAST help?
The PHAST report described the current situation and health of migrants arriving in the UK. The report considered the arrangements for screening for communicable diseases such as tuberculosis as well as highlighting the difficulties migrants have in understanding and navigating the NHS system.

What was the Impact?
PHAST recommendations included access to primary care, the importance of signposting services in relevant languages, funding English language and integration lessons and giving additional appointment times for new patients to see GPs.
